Sitka was settled by Russian traders in 1804 and was the capital of Alaska until 1906.
The federal government built a water tank to supply water to its offices in 1895. The Sitka Water Company was established in 1904.
The waterworks are currently owned by the City/Borough of Sitka, which buys bulk water from the Alaska Bottling Company, which also sells bulk water for export.
