The first water works were built by the San Luis Water Company in 1874.
The city bought the company in 1899 for $50,000.
Water is provided by the City of San Luis Obispo.

The trustees of San Luis Obispo at a meeting recently formally agreed with
Le Franc and Rylaud, representatives of the San Luis Water company, for
tho sale of all the property of the water company to the city for $50,000.
This is the result of negotiations pending for many months. Tho company at
one time asked $125,000 for tlie works, but the citizens showed a
determination to put in a system of their own.
