Canaan is a village in the town of North Canaan, which was incorporated as a town in 1858..
The North Canaan Water Company was incorporated in 1877 and built a gravity system that began operating in 1879.
The company was bought by the Bridgeport Hydraulic Company in 1960, which developed into the Aquarion Water Company of Connecticut.
