District Heating in Allentown, Pennsylvania


The Allentown Steam Heating & Power Company was incorporated March 6, 1888 and began supplying steam in October.

The company suffered a fire and explosion on December 27, 1967 that started a downward spiral for the company, which was declared bankrupt and shut down in June 1968.

The steam heating plant on South Hall street has now been in operation about two weeks. Those who are using the company's service, cannot sufficiently praise the convenience and utility of it,.

The Allentown Steam Heating and Power Co., Allentown, Pa., has changed from the meter to the contract system in furnishing steam to customers, from its central station.

Early this year,  Allentown Steam Heating filed an assumpsit suit in county court, seeking $10- 800 from the Lichtmans for estimated 6,480,000 pounds claiming Allentown Steam Heat ing is charging them too much for steam they had no business taking in the first place.
The firm "is not engaged in the business of furnishing steam for the heating of water but is authorized as a public utility only to furnish steam for heating buildings."  Further, the firm says it has no desire to get into the water heating business.

The Allentown Steam Heating and Power Co. said it had been unable to maintain enough pressure in its steam lines to heat the buildings since a fire at the plant last Wednesday knocked out two coal-fuel boilers.

The steam-producing plant of Allentown Steam Heating & Power Co. was in good condition as it began its 1967-68 job of providing heat for 418 customers.

The Allentown Steam Heating & Power Co. will go on the auction block April 26 unless it pays a $75,000 debt before then. Attorneys for the Fogelsville National Bank acted yesterday to foreclose on the first mortgage of the trouble-ridden utility.

Allentown Steam Heating and Power Company will no longer provide service to 290 central city customers.
Trustees of the firm in bankruptcy have liquidated the business and will sell the assets to the highest bidder. The action will force all business firms and private dwellings serviced by the firm to find other means of heating establishments next winter.
It is the second closing of a steam I heat firm in Eastern Pennsylvania in a week.  Similar action was taken by Reading Steam Company.
