District Heating Summary Document (pdf)

This is a list of all commercial district heating systems in the United States, with the year of initial operation, owner(s), and the year when the system shut down if it is not still operating. Where two or more systems operated in the same city and ended up under common ownership, they are shown as a single system with notes. Several small district heating systems in Alaska are not included here.

Several early institutional district heating systems are also listed.

Several lists of district heating systems were published between 1900 and 1917, but additional evidence of their existence was required for inclusion in this list such as a mention in a local history or in a newspaper or journal article. Additional systems no doubt exist and will be added as they are confirmed. Some systems were sold several times and an attempt has been made to include the first and last owners.

Dates shown in italics are approximate. The OP No. column indicates systems that are currently operating and are also shown in bold. The HW column identifies hot water systems installed between 1894 and 1910. The last of these early hot water systems was shut down in Perry, Iowa on June 14, 1981. An "H" prefix shows systems using high-temperature hot water, a "G" for geothermal hot water systems, and an "E" for more recent systems using European EN-253 piping systems, the first of which began service in Willmar, Minnesota in September 1982. Where "Exhaust steam" is shown in the Notes column, that term was used to describe the system, but most systems built between 1890 and 1918 either distributed exhaust steam or used it to heat hot water. "ADSCO exhaust steam" indicates those systems where it is known that the American District Steam Company installed the piping network. Many systems using exhaust steam also distributed live steam from boilers.
