District Heating in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania


The Bellefonte Electric Light, Steam Heating and Motive Power Company was incorporated on August 6, 1883 and early the next year began installation of a system.

The system was shut down at noon on February 2, 1918 due a lack of coal.

Page 77:  In January of the next year the Bellefonte Gas and Steam Heating Company began its installation of central heating, and the first house to be heated was that of Daniel G. Bush, whose fields and neighbors flocked to the home to admire the wonderful results.

At noon Saturday, February 2, the city steam-heating heating service will be discontinued--a condition that leaves well over one hundred patrons without heat.
