District Heating in Manitowoc, Wisconsin

The City of Manitowoc acquired the local electric light company in 1914. The first steam service was provided to the Rahr Malting Company in 1945 and to Lincoln High School in 1951. Manitowoc Public Utilities currently supplies steam to five customers in downtown Manitowoc and hot water to four customers.

The city council at Manitowoc, in special session Monday night authorized the Public Utilities commission to build the new 20-inch steam line from the power plant to the Rahr Malting company, at an estimated cost of $135,000.

The utilities commission emphasized that it cannot consider any additional steam heating loads outside of Lincoln high school at this time.

Manitowoc Public Utilities - Steam
Manitowoc Public Utilities (MPU) provides low pressure steam directly to five customers in downtown Manitowoc via the district heating loop. The steam is also used to heat a water circuit supplying hot water to four additional customers. Steam can be supplied from three firetube boilers, Boilers 10, 11, and 12, or via extraction from Turbine 9, or via Boiler 9 live steam reduction.

MPU History
1945 MPU developed a plan to supply steam and hot water for nearby businesses including the Rahr Malting Company, which became Busch Agricultural Resources, Inc. and is now Briess Malt & Ingredients Company. Over the years this extracted steam system was expanded to provide heat to Lincoln High School, the Manitowoc County Courthouse and Jail, Bio-Technical Resources, First German Lutheran Church and School, and the Courthouse Pub.
2016 To meet the steam requirements of a large industrial customer, MPU installed two packaged gas-fired firetube boilers, B11 & B12, which produce approximately 100,000 pounds of steam per hour at a pressure of 30 pounds per square inch.
