Muscatine was chartered as a city in 1851.
The city awarded a water works franchise to the Muscatine Water Works Company on December 3, 1875, which built a system designed by William C. Weir. The system was demonstrated on April 12, 1876.
The city bought the system in 1900 for $100,000.
Water is provided by the city of Muscatine.
