Waukegan, Illinois

Waukegan was incorporated as a city in 1859.

The first water works used water from an artesian well that flowed into a small tank.  Two steam engines were added to assist with pumping and a connection was made with the Lake Michigan water supply of the U.S. Sugar Company.  The wells were abandoned in 1894 when the city opened its own supply from Lake Michigan, that was pumped directly into the city's mains.

Water is provided by the city of Waukegan.
