Muncie, Indiana

Muncie was incorporated as city in 1865.

The Muncie city council passed a water works ordinance on April 14, 1884, but it was repealed on January 19, 1885 and replaced with a new ordinance authorizing the mayor and clerk to sign a contract for the erection of water works.  A contract was signed with S.A. Wilson, A.L. Johnson, T.F. Rose, and S.M.Highlands, who were to organize the Muncie Water Works Company  The city agreed to pay $5,000 annually.  The Muncie Water Works Company was incorporated on March 24, 1885, the works were completed on July 31, 1885 and were accepted by the city on October 19, 1885.

John S. Kuhn (1813-1883) lived in Muncie and owned the local gas company.  His sons, James S. and William S. Kuhn, formed the American Water Works and Guarantee Company, limited, in 1886, which became owners of the Muncie Water Works Company.
