Emmitsburg was founded 1785 and has also been known as Emmitsburgh and Emmittsburg.
The Emmitsburg Water Company was incorporated in 1816 by Robert L. Annan, Patrick Reid, John Agnew, Lewis Motter, and Daniel M. Moore appoined to sell stock in the company for the "introduction, distribution, and supply of water to the town of Emmitsburgh." No evidence has been found that this company built a system.
The Emmittsburg Water Company was incorporated in 1823 with Lewis Motter, James Hughes, Henry G. Water, Robert L. Annon and Patrick Reid appointed to sell stock in the company. No evidence has been found that this company built a system.
Another Emittsburg Water Company was incorporated in May, 1883 under the general incorporation act. This company secured laws to protect their rights and property as well as to permit the town of Emmitsburg to contract for water service.
The town of Emmitsburg bought the water system in 1963 for $168,000..
Water is currently provided by the Town of Emmitsburg.
