Egremont was first settled in 1722.
The North Egremont Aqueduct Company was incorporated in 1853 by William W. Stillman, Henry Dewey, and Ephraim Baldwin "for the purpose of supplying inhabitants of the village of North Egremont with good water."
The South Egremont Water Company was incorporated in 1912 by Roscoe C. Taft, William C. Dalzell, William L. Bliss and George H. Read "for the purpose of furnishing the inhabitants of the village of South Egremont and vicinity with water for the extinguishing of fires, and for domestic and other purposes." This company built a system that was purchased by the town of Egremont on September 30, 1996.
The North Egremont Water Company was incorporated in 1912 by Elmer L. Corthell, George Boice, Dwight F. Stillman, Eugene Brummel and Seeley Doty, "for the purpose of supplying the inhabitants of the village of North Egremont, and other inhabitants of the town of Egremont whose dwellings are within a radius of one mile from the geographical centre of said village, with water for the extinguishment of fires and for domestic and other purposes." Although this company received permission to build a system from the state department of health, it apparently did not do so.
Water is provided by the
Town of Egremont.
