The town built a system for fire protection in 1876.

The town was authorized to built water works in 1891, but voters rejected it.

The Methuen Water Company was incorporated in 1892 and the town agreed to rent hydrants from them, but immediately thereafter decided to buy out the franchise, which they did for $1,108.  The system began operating in September, 1894.
