Reading, Massachusetts

Reading was incorporated as a town in 1644.

The Reading Water Company was incorporated in 1885 by Charles F. Brown, Fred W. Hatch and Albert D. Bosson. This company did not build anything.

The town of Reading was authorized to build water works in 1889 and they began operating February 22, 1891, pumping water from the Ipswich River into a standpipe using steam engines.  A second standpipe was added in 1930 on Bear Hill, and a water tower was built next to the original standpipe in 1953.  The 1891 standpipe, known as "The Rocket," was demolished in 1999. A new composite water tower is under construction and should be completed in 2023.
