Brookline

Brookline, Massachusetts

Brookline was incorporated as a town in 1705.

The Bookline Water Company was incorporated in 1861 by Theophilus P. Chandler, William I. Bowditch, William H. Hill "for the purpose of furnishing the inhabitants of Brookline with good water." No evidence has been found that this company built anything.

The town built a water works that pumped groundwater into an elevated reservoir and standpipe using steam engines. Water service began in May, 1875. An earthenware (stone-ware) pipe was originally used, but was soon replaced.
